The race to fortify our defenses against respiratory viruses is on, and Professor Nathan Bartlett is leading the charge. As a virologist at the University of Newcastle and head of HMRI's Infection Research Program, he's dedicated to finding innovative ways to prevent infections before they take hold. His latest endeavor, a nasal spray called INNA-051, is making waves in the scientific community.
A Nasal Defense
Professor Bartlett's research focuses on enhancing the body's natural immune defenses against respiratory viruses. INNA-051, an investigational nasal spray, aims to boost the innate immune system, the body's first line of defense. By activating this system at the point of entry, the spray can potentially stop viruses like influenza, RSV, and COVID-19 before they establish an infection.
"Instead of targeting a single virus, we're enhancing the body's broader antiviral response," Bartlett explains. "This means it has the potential to protect against a range of respiratory infections."
From Discovery to Development
Bartlett's involvement began with an intriguing observation made by researchers at Melbourne's Doherty Institute. They noticed that a compound originally developed to improve vaccine effectiveness also provided protection against influenza without a vaccine. This led Bartlett to design a program to prove its effectiveness or lack thereof.
Over the next five years, Bartlett and his team, along with collaborators in Australia and the UK, tested the compound against various respiratory viruses. Bartlett's role in Newcastle was crucial, as he led the preclinical validation of the drug and its effects on viruses.
Moving Towards Patients
The early research paved the way for clinical development. ENA Respiratory, a Melbourne-based biotechnology company, secured significant funding and a contract with the US Department of Defense. A Phase 2 clinical trial is now underway in the US, following a successful safety study involving 200 participants.
"You hope all that work you did makes it through clinical development and eventually ends up in doctors' hands treating patients," Bartlett expresses. "It would protect those at high risk of nasty outcomes."

As winter approaches, the rise in respiratory illness serves as a reminder of the ongoing impact of these viruses. Bartlett emphasizes the importance of simple public health measures, such as vaccination, staying home when unwell, practicing good hand hygiene, and avoiding close contact with vulnerable individuals.
"Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and those around you from serious illness," he advises. "Small actions can make a big difference in protecting our families, workplaces, and communities."
